I got my wakeup call at the age of 19...


I was diagnosed with a stratospherically high cholesterol level when I was still a student.

Not only that, but my family has a history of strokes and heart related diseases:  my father died of arthrosclerosis at the age of 52, my mother has had 5 strokes and is completely immobile – bed ridden – my mother’s 2 sisters and one of her brothers died from strokes and my brother also has a high cholesterol level. 

So my chances of avoiding heart disease don’t look good!

There are a number of things I do to ensure that my excess cholesterol doesn’t bring my life to a screeching halt well before time – one of which is watching my weight.

Apart from the threats to my health of excess weight, when I do let it rise too high I realize that I feel like a real blob. Usually what happens is I stop my exercise routine and eat the wrong types of food for a couple of weeks.  Christmas time and whenever I go on vacation are typical times when this happens.

At first I don’t realize that I’m putting on weight.  It kind of creeps up on me.  It’s only when I get back into my routine that I realise how my general well-being has degenerated. 

It doesn’t take long for me to get back to normal – usually not more than a week or so.  And I start feeling the benefits of an improved routine within a couple of days.  That’s the time that I realise how much my well-being had degenerated.

The best part is during that first week as I’m regaining my normal weight and fitness level.  I feel absolutely BRILLIANT!  It’s a contrast to the way I was feeling before and the change is quicker, so it’s more noticeable.

Even though in pure pounds terms my weight doesn’t change that much I FEEL much lighter on my feet.  Better balanced, more mobile.

My digestive system feels a lot more comfortable and overall I feel completely different.

I manage my weight through a combination of self education, an exercise regime of light gym work or hiking, only drinking alcohol at the weekend and then usually only on a Saturday, and eating carefully. 

I bring this up only to illustrate that it takes more than 1 activity to effectively manage your weight.  It requires a routine, or a system or a program – whatever you want to call it.

Over the years I’ve developed a pretty effective strategy for knowing what my current condition is and what I need to do to change it.

I also follow the principle of small changes.  I don’t try to make drastic changes to my routine or expect drastic changes in my weight.  Taking small steps is, firstly, far easier and, secondly, likely to yield longer lasting results.

I do encourage you to manage your weight if you’re carrying excess pounds.  Not only is your health risk greatly reduced but you’ll feel SO much better!
